Between Independence and Salem, the Willamette makes several wide bends around Hayden Island, Browns Island, and Minto Island, none of which are true islands. As the Willamette has changed its course over the last 150 years, the channels behind islands named by early settlers dried up and left only disconnected sloughs, crescent-shaped lakes, and large nonislands.
The trip from Independence to Salem begins when you leave a car or bike atthe boat ramp at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem. Proceed to Riverview Park in Independence and launch from there.
There are a few rocks as you pass an island at the end of the first broad S bend in the river. Other than that just watch for power boats as you approach Salem.
