I 1517 indgår kong Christian den Anden våbenhvile med Sveriges rigsforstander Sten Sture den yngre. Som led i aftalen bliver Gustav Eriksson af adelsslægten Vasa indsat som gidsel på Kalø slot på en lille halvø i Århusbugten.
