The Halifax (Fort Massey) Memorial stands within the cemetery and commemorates two servicemen who were killed in a 1917 explosion but whose bodies were not found. That explosion occurred on December 6th in Halifax Harbour (The Narrows) when SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship fully loaded with wartime explosives, collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo. The blast was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons and it leveled much of the city. Over 2,000 people died.
