The frame residence now known as "Sunnyside" (24 Union St.), built ca. 1859, has received several additions including a large semi-circular Queen Anne porch in the latter part of the nineteenth century, but the original five-bay I house may have been erected by David Milner on the three acre parcel he owned at the eastern end of Union Street. Milner granted a right-of-way to the Mt. Pleasant and Martinsville [Martin's Ferry] Plank Road Company that was chartered in 1851, and he briefly operated a temperance hotel although it is not known whether the site was here or in town. Although this was an ideal stopping point for coaches approaching from the east, both the plank road and the temperance hotel were unsuccessful. Mt. Pleasant was doing too little too late to create a position for itself on Ohio's transportation network . Based on the fact that the original pre-1860 I House with interior gable end chimneys is visually intact, and the rear ell exhibits historic six-over-six lights, this resource contributes to the district.
- Historic District Nomination
