The word "roça" is the Portuguese designation for a plantation in the overseas territories. Sao Tome and Principe had no significance within the Portuguese empire but as agricultural ground. It's no surprise though that apart from the capital town, São Tomé, there were no villages independent from the plantations (roças) network.

After the independence of the country, in 1975, these plantations became regular villages. Some are still producing agricultural goods, some have no significant production.

Roça Bombaim still has some production but it's mostly known for its accommodation activity now. It is one of the most remote plantations, close to the center of the island. Well, the acceptable dirt road leading there makes things easier though.
