Sofus Bresemann var socialdemokrat og Nakskovs første folkevalgte borgmester i perioden 1914 til 1928. Han havde i 1901 grundlagt Lolland-Falsters Socialdemokrat, det senere Ny Dag, og avisen havde i mange, mange år til huse i byens gamle posthus, bygget i 1905. Posthuset lå i Jernbanegade 8, hvor der nu er bl.a. Foreningshus, lokalhistorisk arkiv og museet Det gamle Trykkeri.

På statuen ser man Sofus klædt i sin lange frakke imens han er ved at bygge noget op i mursten.
Statuen er opført i naturlig størrelse.

Sofus Bresemann betød meget for udviklingen i Nakskov, ikke mindst på det sociale område, hvor han især interesserede sig for børn, gamle og dårligt stillede. Han gik i spidsen for at oprette skolelæge og skoletandlæge, børnebespisning, skolehaver, hjælp til fattige konfirmander, forsorg, sygehus og meget andet.

Sonny Bresemann was a Social Democrat and Nakskov's first elected mayor in the period 1914-1928. He had in 1901 founded Lolland-Falster Socialdemokrat, later New Day, and the newspaper had in many, many years housed in the old post office, built in 1905. The post office was located in Jernbanegade 8, which now include Clubhouse, local historical archives and museum the surrounding country.

Sofus Bresemann meant a lot to the development of Nakskov, especially in the social sphere, where he particularly interested in children, the elderly and disadvantaged. He took the lead to create at school and school dentist, kids meals, school gardens, helping poor lasses care, hospital and much more.
