The gazebo in Sheringham Park is located at the top of Oak Wood, a steep hill behind Sheringham Hall. From the top there are wonderful all round views. The northern handrail has two explanatory plaques detailing what else can be seen apart from the vast majestic expanse of the North Sea. This ranges from the seaside town of Sheringham in the east, to the village of Weybourne and beyond in the west. In the valley below runs the track of the heritage North Norfolk Railway on which trains can frequently be seen running. Behind, and to both sides, are the rolling hills and valleys of the Cromer Holt Ridge, a terminal moraine created by glaciers in the Ice Age.
Details of the gazebo are given on two plaques at the base. The first states 'This gazebo, the gift of Mildred Cordeaux, was officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wals on March 20th 1988.' The second 'The frame of this gazebo was flown in by the Royal Air Force on 20th October 1987. Designed by C J Appleton, Regional Building Manager National Trust. Main Contractor H Bullen and Son Cromer.. Steelwork North Walsham Engineering Co Ltd. Project Engineers Fordham Johns Partnership Norwich. The wood is English Oak.' All of which shows a pleasing Norfolk involvement.
Sheringham Park is owned by the National Trust. The gardens were designed by Humphrey Repton in 1812 at the request of Abbott and Charlotte Upcher who had bought the estate the previous year. Many types of plant and tree can be found in this rolling peaceful idyll. There are marked paths through the woods and meadows but the crowning glory is the vast tract of rhodedendrons which make a spectacular sight when in bloom mid May to mid June. However, whatever the time of year there is much to appreciate.
