The 1885 Pythian Castle is an excellent example of commercial Queen Anne architecture. The Pythian Castle is a two-story building of wood construction with 2,880 square feet on each floor. Prominent among the building’s exterior features are the five towers, three round-corner ones with “witches hats” and two square bays in the enters of street side walls. The Arcata Order of Knights of Pythias, known as the North Star Lodge No. 39, was established in 1876. This lot was purchased for a building in Nov. 1881, but construction did not begin until the fall of 1884 and was completed in April 1885. The second-story hall was used by the Knights for their ceremonial functions and conferences. Dinners were held at the rear of the downstairs where the kitchen and dining room were located. The remainder of the ground floor was commercial space. The building was sold in 1944 and has had a series of owners since. The building underwent a restoration and renovation in 1984.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 20, 1986. For more information on details of the building view the National Register Nomination Form (visit link) and historic photos (visit link) .
