The real historic centre of the town of Zdar nad Sazavou is situated in the former Cistercian monastery premises, in the present castle owned by Constantin Kinsky. In 1252 the founders of the monastery, Bocek from Obrany and Smil from Lichtenburk invited a group of monks from Nepomuk and gave them the lots for monastery building. The greatest prosperity of the monastery dates back to the first half of the 18th century when it was administered by the Abbot Vaclav Vejmluva. At that time an extensive baroque reconstruction was carried out led by the architect Jan Santini Aichl. After dissolution of the monastery in 1784 the premises were changed into a farm and a castle.
Besides the Kinsky Farming Administration the visitors can find a number of interesting expositions and exhibitions here today, such as the world-known Museum of Book (the largest museum of its kind in all of Europe), the permanent exhibition called 300 Years of Piano, exposition from the life of the architect Jan Santini Aichl, the Kinsky Gallery as well as other occasional exhibitions.
