The original Jacoby store building was built in 1857 for pioneer merchant Augustus Jacoby. Materials were brick and stone from local sources and the walls were 2 feet thick. The building was 104 feet long by 34 feet wide and 24 feet high at the south end with a full basement at the north end, because of slope of the ground. In 1880, A. Brizard, another Arcata Pioneer, bought the building to house his mercantile firm. In 1907, the building was totally redesigned by Eureka architect Warren Skillings and the second and third stories were added in addition to the building being widened to 50 feet and lengthened to 185 feet. The resulting building was an example of its type and period, utilizing Classical and Renaissance Revival elements popular for commercial and public buildings of the early 20th century. The Brizard family closed the business in 1974 and began a renovation which was completed in 1977 resulting in a building which now is home to a variety of retail shops, restaurants and offices. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 17, 1982. For more information on details of the building view the National Register Nomination Form (
