La vallée de la Boutonne s'étende sur une centaine de Kilometres du sud des Deux Sevres ou la riviere prend sa source(Chef Boutonne) à l'Ouest de la Chrente Maritime ou elle se jette dans le fleuve de la Charente Carrillan près de Rochefort
Jusqu'à l'avenement du chemin de fer, la Boutonne constituait une des principales voies de communication pour le transport des bois, vins, eau de vie, blé et farines.
