This sculpture depicts the river god reclining half naked on a slab while casually holding an apparently empty jug on his hip.
A sign at the site indicates that it dates from the time of Hadrian. It was once part of a fountain in the 16th century with the basin being part of a sarcophagus from 170-180 AD decorated with scenes of battles between Greeks and Amazons. Interestingly, the piece was mistakenly believed to represent the Tigris River for many years.
Unfortunately the artist appears to be unknown.
