The small brick vernacular building (346 Union Street) was built ca. 1856 as a blacksmith shop and subsequently served as a shoe shop and bank. The Mt. Pleasant Historical Society acquired the property in 1960 and today it serves as their museum.

The building now is the Mount Pleasant Historical Center. It is very good condition. The have a collection of artifacts and documents relating the the towns history particularly its role as a stop along the Underground Railroad.
