Cyclist Doug Flynn was killed, and at least one more rider injured, in a head-on collision last on Sept 24, 2009 by a driver trying to pass a large farm tractor on what was then a two lane roadway.

From the police report...“[the driver]stated that there was a right to pass and so she did. [she] stated that while she was attempting to pass the tractor that the glare from the sunlight began to get in her face but that she did not see anyone. [She] stated that as she was passing in the left lane she began to press on the gas pedal when she saw the bicyclist (Flynn) right in front of her.”

From Doug's Obituary:

"Douglas Morse Flynn, 37, loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2009 in Yuma County from this life into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father while doing one of the things he was passionate about-bicycling. He was born May 31, 1972 to Gerry and Hilda Flynn in Athens, Georgia.

Doug graduated from Ridgeland High School in Flintstone, Georgia in 1991. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission for the church in the Caribbean West Indies Mission between 1991 - 1993. Afterwards, while attending Ricks College, now BYU-Idaho, he met Mary Anne Jacobson, and they were married in December 1994 in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple.

Doug graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science. He also had a strong interest in computers which led him into a field of web design and internet development. He has been employed with The Yuma Sun since 2002 as the creative services manager. Doug really enjoyed his work and his association with his colleagues at The Sun. He was concerned with the well-being of all and strived to uplift and encourage others in their work.

Doug loved being with his family, friends, and exercising to the max. He loved biking, swimming, running, boating, watching sports, and so much more. He was an avid Georgia Bulldogs football fan and could never pass up an opportunity to gloat about his team. GO DAWGS! His personalized license plate even stated "DAWGDAZ". Doug welcomed a good hearty competition and gave his all. Doug was very outgoing, made friends easily, but most importantly loved his family above all else.

Doug is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Jacobson; daughters, Hannah and Jenna; son, Joseph; father, Gerry Flynn; mother, Hilda Morse; brothers, Brian, Russell, Scott, John, Matthew, and Paul; sister, Laura Smartt; and many nieces, nephews, and family members and friends."
