A central obelisk at Fort Laramie National Historic Site is a great place to put historic markers -- there are five here, plus a medallion for the Mormon Trail.
The obelsik was placed here in 1913, 23 years after Fort Laramie was abandoned by the Army. A dedication plaque reads as follows:
"FORT LARAMIE
Military Post on the Oregon Trail
June 16, 1849 – March 2, 1890
This Monument is Erected by the State of Wyoming and
A Few Interested Residents
1913"
