The youth centre and its gorgeous mural are just south of the Slocan School, on the corner of Harold Street and Griffin Avenue. Directly behind is the town's skate park. If our visit was any indication, the skate park is a popular and much used facility.
The mural depicts the artist's vision of the surrounding locality, which dwells on the beauty of the Slocan Valley and the abundance of wildlife to be found there. Slocan sits at the southern end of Slocan Lake, upon which the mural is centred. It seems that within the mural is every type and species of flora and fauna to be found locally. Included is a reference to bygone years when orcharding was a major industry in the valley, with a girl having picked a basket full of apples. Altogether, it is a mural well worth stopping to gaze upon at length.
We noted that the mural references the past exclusively, as no depiction is made of Slocan's present economic base, which rests primarily on forestry, tourism and recreation. Extremely well done, we only wish that it had been signed. Research has found, however, that the mural was likely either done or spearheaded by by Virginia Graham. The project was apparently funded, at least in part, by the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance in 2000 - 2001.
Unfortunately, information on the artist herself was not to be found.
