Johnny Worricker and Benedict Baron are MI5 officers and close friends. Baron circulates a report that, on page eight, has details about the Prime Minister’s knowledge of US torture of prisoners abroad. Baron dies suddenly of a heart attack. Worricker wonders if Baron had intended publishing the report more widely.
Meanwhile Worricker starts talking to his neighbour, Nancy Pierpan. Nancy is a political activist, angry that her brother was shot by the Israeli army whilst holding a white flag. Worricker and Pierpan share an interest in modern art and jazz, but Worricker is suspicious about the coincidence of them being neighbours. Worricker has her investigated by his friend Rollo. Worricker decides to leave MI5 and sells one of his paintings to go underground. He manages to obtain a file on Pierpan’s brother and arranges for it to be leaked.
