The club was formed in 1903 when Manningham F.C. converted from Rugby League football. They took over the club colours of claret and amber and started off in League Division II.

Three years later the team won the F.A. Cup the only major honour in their history.

The 2012 - 2013 season was their most successful in recent history and they became the the first ever team from the fourth tier of English football to reach a major domestic Wembley cup final, the Football League Cup, losing 5–0 to Swansea City. In the same season, they returned to Wembley for the play off final and won promotion to League One, the third tier in the English football league system, with a 3–0 win over Northampton Town.

The year 1985 saw both success and a terrible tragedy for the club and their fans. Near the end of the season the club had enough points to earn them promotion into Division Two and before the final game were presented with the Division Three cup. However an old wooden stand dating from 1908 which was due for replacement caught fire during the match. There were 56 fatalities and at least 265 people injured in the fire.

A major enquiry into the fire led to a change in building regulations and the banning of building new wooden stands.

In 1986 the club spent £2.6 million building a new main stand. Following on from that various other parts of the ground have been developed and improved giving the stadium its current capacity of 25,136.
