Local blacksmithing artist Michael Kinghorn created a distinct sculpture for Fire Station 47, located at 3559 Greenbank Road in the Barrhaven area of Ottawa, entitled Collapse 2012.
Using locally found and recycled materials the sculpture depicts the dangers faced by Fire and Rescue workers. About to collapse the structure is supported by stainless steel beams. The copper sign above these beams portrays the Urban Search and Rescue image, a caution warning to rescue teams. Inside is a collection of gears, blades, horseshoes and a wagon wheel about to fall on rescuers. From the City of Ottawa Public Art Commission page: (

visit link) Fire Station 47 specializes in “trench and collapse,” and the firefighters are trained to rescue people from burning, collapsing structures. All the parts in the sculpture are installed inside the shell of an old water tank, with a cross section removed to expose its innards.
