This zinc headstone marks the grave of David B. Pickens. His obituary reads:
"Aged Sufferer Passes Away--David B. Pickens, of North Salem Succumbed to Apoplexy Last Night-Funeral Tomorrow
David B. Pickens, an aged and highly respected resident of North Salem, passed from this life at 9:40 o'clock last night, at the family home, corner of Division and 5th street, North Salem, after an illness of several days from the effects of apoplexy, aged 83 years, 6 months and 21 days.
Deceased has been feeble for a number of years, and last Sunday, while out in his yard he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. The best medical attendance possible was promptly secured, but without avail, and, after lingering three days the aged sufferer passed away peacefully last night.
Deceased was born in Tennessee, and came to the Pacific coast in 1862, when he located in Polk county. After a number of years he removed to Washington county, and sixteen years ago he located in North Salem, where he resided until his demise as indicated above.
Deceased leaves an aged widow, five sons and two daughters, all grown and settled in life. They are: John H., and Joseph N. Pickens of Salem; Charles C. of Castle Rock, Washington; Thos H., of Montana; Lewis F., of Republic, Washington; and Mrs. Sadie Lewis, of Castle Rock, Washington.
The funeral will be held from the family residence in North Salem, at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Friday), conducted by Elder Wilson. Interment will be had in Lee Mission Cemetery.
Deceased was a member of the M.E. church for the past 70 years and in early life became a Free Mason, but had not affiliated with that order for a number of years." -Oregon Statesman, March 28, 1901
