This "City Hall" looks relatively new, about 120 years newer than the city itself. It's not as new as it looks, however, as a result of recent renovations in 2009.

The village office houses the administrative, business and executive arms of the Village of Slocan. It's where the locals go to pay many of their city related bills and fees and where the village council gathers to discuss and plan the city's future.

Platted in 1892, Slocan City became a city in June of 1901. Built as a result of rich silver strikes nearby, it became a launching point and supply centre for he area's mines. As the mines played out and prospectors and miners moved on, the city shrank, becoming a ghost of its former self by 1920. In 1958 it reverted to village status and its nam reverted to "Slocan", but remained known locally as "Slocan City", partially to distinguish it from Slocan Park and South Slocan, other communities in the valley.

It remains today a small village of approximately 300, supported primarily by the lumber and tourism industries.

For the benchmark hunters, there's a benchmark, 1549J, in the foundation of the north wall of the village office.
