Owned and operated by the Province of Alberta, its outside displays consist of much of the equipment of the type used at the oil sands, both contemporarily and in the past. The emphasis here is on BIG. The oil sands are BIG, and the equipment employed to work them is similarly BIG.
As well as exhibits and displays, the Centre offers educational programs, public programs, and special events year round. Open year round (with fewer open days in the winter), this is a very enlightening and educational waypoint that everyone who is unfamiliar with the workings ant the history of the oil sands should include in their itinerary when in the vicinity.
The Discovery Centre describes itself thus:
'Vision:
“Sharing the Oil Sands Experience”
Mission:
"To serve as the gateway to Alberta’s oil sands by presenting its history, science, and technology, promoting appreciation for it, and providing learning opportunities to all visitors.
The Centre opened in 1985 as the Fort McMurray Oil Sands Interpretive Centre, and in September 2002, the redeveloped exhibit hall was opened. It was created through donations by private companies, individuals, and the Alberta Government, and by the hard work, dedication, and vision of advisory and fund raising committees and the former Friends of the Oil Sands Discovery Centre."
