In Chapter 13 of Edith Wharton's "House of Mirth", the main charcater, Lily Bart has just left her one-time admirer, Selden. She walks to 41st and Fifth Avenue and then decides to sink down "...on an empty bench in the glare of an electric street-lamp" in Bryant Park. She contemplates her situation and, although cold, she doesn't want to go home because she knows she has become dependent on a drug that she has left there. As it gets dark...almost all the other people in the Park leave and a stranger comes up to ask her if she is ill. It turns out the stranger was an old acquaintance, Nettie Crane. Crane takes Lily back to her nearby home.
