In Chapter 11 of Edith Wharton's "House of Mirth" the main character Lily Bart lingers "...for a moment on the corner, looked out on the afternoon spectacle of Fifth Avenue. It was a day in late April, and the sweetness of spring was in the air. It mitigated the ugliness of the long crowded thoroughfare, blurred gaunt roof-lines, threw a mauve veil over the discouraging perspective of the side streets, and gave a touch of poetry to the delicate haze of green that marked the entrance to the Park."
At that site, Lily notices several of her former friends in high society. Lily has lost her place not only in high society..but she has also recently lost her job as a millener's trainee. She decides to go home.
About a week later, still depressed, she returns to this area and settles in a restaurant on 59th Street.
Visitors to this intersection today will not only find the entrance to Central Park, but also the Plaza Hotel and the General William Tecumseh Monument.
