The historic Simpson-Vance House at 904 G Street, Eureka, California is an excellent example of Queen Anne architecture. It features a corner tower, stacked bays, and varied rooflines and is generously decorated with flat and spindlework ornamentation covering the frieze, portico, bays, windows, and tower. The house is two-and-a-half story, wood frame house with about 7700 square feet of space.
The house was built in 1892 for Eureka contractor/builder, James Simpson and his large family. In 1902, the house was sold to John M. Vance and it remained in the Vance family until 1943. In 1974, the State of California acquired the property for the proposed Eureka Freeway. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 17, 1986. When the Freeway project was abandoned the Redwood Community Action Agency obtained the building and restored it.
