The Mount Wood Cemetery was founded in 1848 to relieve the space constraints of earlier cemeteries in Wheeling which were becoming full to capacity. The cemetery is located high on Wheeling Hill northeast of the Wheeling downtown area. The cemetery has a few thousand graves on its nearly twelve acres rolling hills. The cemetery was a popular cemetery through the 19th century into the early 20th century when Greenwood Cemetery was opened east of Wheeling. The cemetery has ten family mausoleums. It gravestones range from the plain stones to more elaborate Victorian era stones. Many of the earliest stones are for graves which were relocated to Mount Wood Cemetery with the earliest stone being dated 1817. During the twentieth century burial declined significantly and by the 1970s had become infrequent. The final burial was in 2003. The cemetery grounds are well maintained by the City of Wheeling.
The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
