Ved skulpturens afsløring den 6. november 1942 talte borgmester Bindslev på baggrund af besættelsestidens virkelighed om de "to unge Mennesker, der sidder og tænker paa Fremtiden – med Alvor og med Fortrøstning. Mange vil kunne spejle deres egen Alvor og Fortrøstning til Livet deri." Politiken syntes ikke, der var så megen trøst at hente: "Gruppen med de to Unge virker temmelig trist med sin kedeligt symetriske Komposition og sin humørløse Ubevægelighed; man forestiller sig uvilkaarligt, at den unge Pige sidder og trøster sin Ven i hans Arbejdsløshed."

When the sculpture was unveiled on 6 November 1942, the mayor spoke against the background of the reality of the Occupation about the “two young people sitting and thinking about the future – with earnestness and confidence. Many people will be able to reflect their own earnestness and confidence in life in it”. The newspaper Politiken found little consolation in it: “The group of two young people seems rather mournful with its uninteresting symmetrical composition and its humourless immobility; one automatically imagines the girl is sitting consoling a friend who is unemployed.”
