What they've done is to put a bit of the history of their very historic downtown on each of the downtown utility boxes. The boxes all come in pairs, a big and a little one, with each displaying pictures of an historic building or business, or even an historic resident. Each set has at least one little blurb, relating some of the history of the building or business showcased.
This pair of boxes displays historical photos of the old Phair Hotel and the first Canadian Bank of Commerce.
The photo below, courtesy of Touchstones Nelson, shows the Phair Hotel in 1891.
Phair Hotel (later Strathcona) 398 Victoria Street
In 1892, Maritimer E.E."Pop” Phair opened and operated the hotel which bore his name. The Phair was for many years Nelson's most prestigious hotel, counting the visiting Governor General the Earl of Aberdeen and his party among its guests. In 1898 the Phair was sold and after extensive renovations re-opened as the Strathcona Hotel. In May of 1955 the hotel was destroyed by fire, 6 residents losing their lives.
