What they've done is to put a bit of the history of their very historical downtown on each of the downtown utility boxes. The boxes all come in pairs, a big and a little one, with each displaying pictures of an historic building or business, or even an historic resident. Each set has at least one little blurb, relating some of the history of the building or business showcased.
This pair of utility boxes is showcasing Nelson's first Fire Hall and the Johnstone Block, on 598 Baker Street.
Nelson's first Fire Hall, 601 Josephine Street
The Deluge Hook and Ladder Company, Nelson's first (unofficial) Fire Department, constructed a wooden Fire Hall on the southeast corner of Josephine and Victoria, Streets in 1894. The building housed the department's hoses and hosereels, as well as accommodations for 2 on-duty firemen. After construction of the firehall at the northeast corner of Latimer and Ward Streets in 1912, the old hall was used as a storage building until demolition in 1926.
