The historic Post Office and Courthouse at 514 H Street in Eureka, California. The building is a three story brick faced structure resting on a full raised basement. The building is supported by a structural steel frame. The front facade features the building’s most striking exterior element, a series of five round arch Georgian windows which extend the height of the second and third stories above the main entrance.
Construction of the building began in late July 1909 and the cornerstone was set on December 24, 1909. The building was occupied in January 1911. The ground floor was occupied by the Post Office, the second floor was a large courtroom, and the third floor was for office space for Federal agencies. In 1937 five murals were hung in the courtroom as part of a New Deal program. After over 100 years the use of the use of the three floors remain the same with only changes in some of the agencies using the building.
The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 10, 1983. For more information on the Post Office check here (
