"Canadian Consulting 2013 Engineering Awards

The engineering performance team Bouthillette Parizeau received an Award of Excellence in the Building category for their work on the Centre for Sustainable Development. The award-winning projects are described in full in Canadian Consulting Engineer’s October 2013 issue. The jury was impressed: "This project is a showcase of fine engineering practice in the field of sustainable development. The jury liked the idea of it being a living laboratory for educating the public in green building."

Now in their 45th year, the Canadian Consulting Engineering awards are the highest recognition for excellence in the Canadian consulting engineering industry. The program is a joint initiative of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada (ACEC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine." source : (visit link)

» source : (visit link)

The Centre for Sustainable Development is the first building in Quebec to receive the LEED® Canada New Construction Platinum certification. It serves as a model and reference for anyone interested in environmental protection with respect to construction. Guided tours allow members of the public to learn about the building’s characteristics. In the fall of 2012, an interactive exhibit was launched to offer the public another opportunity to get to know the building, free of charge.

The building belongs to a non-profit organization run fairly and equally by its members. By offering high-quality, urban space for head offices and workplaces, the building helps environmentally and socially minded organizations maximize their productivity and influence while pooling their resources and sharing workspace. A great way to strengthen organizations through a democratic management approach.

Here are a few examples of actions taken in this building :

The Maison is outfitted with waterless urinals and low-flow faucets.

Initiatives to reduce Heat Islands (replacing a dark-coloured roof membrane with vegetation, creating greenspace at ground level, planting roadside trees and installing highly reflective light-coloured roofing materials).

With 32 earth tubes installed directly beneath the surface of the building, the Maison stands out for its innovative use of geothermics in a commercial building in Montreal.

The installed technology makes it possible to heat and cool the building via the exchange of heat energy with the ground.

The Maison has high-performance fenestration systems, generally comprised of triple-pane windows filled with argon gas and having a double low-emissivity coating.

The use of high-performance lighting devices that emit only a small proportion of the energy consumed in the form of heat makes it possible to produce more light using less energy.

Replacement of materials that are suspected of being toxic with materials that are recognized as being less toxic, such as no-VOC paints and urea-formaldehyde resin-based adhesives.
