1251 Market Charter Plaque - Bradford, UK - UK Historical Markers on Waymarking.com

The plaque is in the form of an engraved paving slab outside the entrance to Bradford's modern indoor market called the Oastler Center.

AS it is on the ground it is easy to miss because of the number of people visiting the market. The text on the stone is as follows.

A.D. 1251

The King to the Archbishops, greeting.
Know ye that we have granted and by this our
present Charter confirmed, to our beloved valet,
Edmund de Lacy, that he and his heirs for ever,
shall have one market every week at his manor
of BRAFFORD in the county of York...

These days the City of Bradford has this indoor market rather than an outside one and the center is held Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sat 8.00am – 5pm Wed, 8.00am – 2pm This short film gives a tour of the market and its stalls.
