Located on the University of Nevada, Reno campus is a steel framework display that acts as both a teaching aid and a sculpture. There (was) a metal plaque at the base of the sculpture that reads:

STEEL TEACHING AID
AND SCULPTURE

A visual guide to the methods of steel
framing and their corresponding connections
Program developed by the
American Institute of Steel
Construction
Implemented by the
American Society of Civil Engineers
& Associated General Contractors
Student Chapter
Dedicated December 6, 2002

Although no artist or sculptor is listed on the plaque I'm to assume this teaching aid was sculpted by a professor of the University's Civil Engineering Department.

When the viewer looks at this sculpture without reading the plaque, it appears very abstract and non-representational. Those individuals familiar with steel construction methods would probably think otherwise and immediately know what is being portrayed. This just goes to show that in the art world, what one person sees, depending on his or her knowledge of the subject matter, can be totally contrary to another individual's impression!

*NOTE* I borrowed a couple of pictures from an individual's Flickr account to obtain the info behind this piece and have included the link to his page here. His pictures are copyrighted and I've placed his copyright on his pictures.
