"Founded by the will of the abbot Francesco Marucelli , from which it takes its name , is the result of the donation of his rich and large personal library , which at a testamentary left along with a pension for the construction of a special building in Florence with the aim to facilitate the study also poor youth , since at the time did not exist in his hometown any institution of its kind . He was the grandson Alexander himself who built the building by the architect Alessandro Dori , which was opened to the public September 18, 1752 , becoming the first library open to the general culture to a wide audience as even today one can read the inscription on the façade : " Marucellorum Bibliotheca publicae maxime pauperum utilitati " (" Library of Marucelli for public use , especially the poor ").
The first librarian was Angelo Maria Bandini , who in 50 years of business and oversaw increased with other funds. With the suppression of the religious institutions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries been received by the other substantial library book collections ( such as the library of the Badia Fiorentina) , in still others were purchased on the market."
