The parish was formed in 1785 when 67 members of the First Parish Congregational separated from that church in opposition to the rigid Calvinistic beliefs. The original meetinghouse was built in 1792 on Summer St, but the congregation bought land from Isaih Thomas in 1829 and built a brick meetinghouse. This second meetinghouse burned in 1849 and the present church was built, dedicated March 26, 1851.
