On July 19, 1985, the New York Times ran the follwoing brief story:
"St. Peter's Basilica Repaired
ROME, July 18— The facade of St. Peter's Basilica is undergoing complete restoration for the first time since it was built more than 350 years ago. The facade, completed in 1614, is adorned with 18-foot marble statues that have suffered considerable damage over the years from atmospheric pollution, officials said."
When visiting St. Peter's in September 2013, the poster of this Waymark noticed that many of the statues were still behind chicken-wire due to their crumbling.
