There is a also modern, gray, granite footstone here that says:
Sarah K. Fox
Aug. 24, 1852
First Grave in Cemetery
Sarah's marble headstone is in remarkable condition, given its age. It's a variant on the standard theme, but it tapers near the top before going into an inverted square shape. The inscription is:
S.K.
Fox
Dau. of Joseph &
Elizabeth Fox
Born
April 25, 1837
Died
Aug. 24, 1852
When blooming youth is snatched away
By death's resistless hand,
Our hearts the mournful tribute pay
Which pity must demand.
The Texas Historical Marker elaborates a bit:
Set aside as a burial ground by Joseph Fox. His daughter Sarah K. first person buried here, Aug. 24, 1852.
Grounds are cared for by descendants, friends.
Jos. Fox was born 1800 in London. Died in Prospect, Texas, 1872. Was physician.
Many prominent early settlers interred here.
