Britannia was the Roman name for Britain. The first mention of the symbolic female figure was made by Samuel Pepys and refers to a medal struck in the 17th century. The model for the figure was a mistress of Charles II resting on the familiar shield.
This pub sign has a (faded) traditional painting of Britannia with shield, Roman helmet and trident.
