Each Station of the Cross has, mounted on the granite base beneath the statue, either one or two bronze plaques dedicating the Station. This, Station number I, has been dedicated to the memory of the Reverend Monsignor Aloysius Verhagen, a Jesuit Priest who was born in 1869 and passed away in May of 1938. In the late 1800s he was sent first to the Big Bend country, then to the Spokane Falls area to minister to the natives and settlers. The Station is just inside the entrance, to the south of the roadway.
