Captain John Savage is known as the founding father of West Shefford. Here's some of what we found and translate from the Historical Bromont's website :

Parents originally from Northern Ireland and presumably American by birth , John Savage was a wealthy farmer in the state of New York in 1775 when conflict erupts between the English colonies. From the beginning of the war of Independence John Savage appears as a staunch monarchist .
He refuses to take command of the local company of the army of Congress and he is surprised to toast health of King George . he was arrested a first time and thrown in jail. Released just to be arrested again, this new arrest leads to prison for four years. Sentenced to hang , he escaped and he is found in 1782 , a year before the end of hostilities , an informant for the British Army .

In 1783, he moved to the lordship of Foucault ( Caldwell 's Manor ), but in the disputed part of the territory , in Alburg . Bad decision! After eight years of work on his land , territory returned to the State of Vermont as they "kicked out" all the Loyalists.

The year 1791 is the date of adoption of the Constitutional Act that created Upper and Lower Canada, established the parliamentary and opened for settlement throughout the territory of the Eastern Townships Eastern Townships . This free land grant raises much faster interest and in July 1793 permissions survey are " granted to 173 cantons , requested by the more than 250 leaders and 10,000 associates"

Mode concession adopted by the British government for the colonization of uncultivated land in Lower Canada , largely focused on the role of chef de canton . And the man who presides over the destiny of the township of Shefford , this is John Savage.

Upon proclamation of February 1792 informing them of the availability of land in the townships , John Savage starts work and began recruiting members. His request was welcomed by the authorities , and six months later, almost going to pay Quebec mandatory allegiance oath , he received the approval of the Lieutenant Governor to survey Shefford Township and , by extension , informal permission to settle on his land.
In August 1792, John Savage, accompanied by a surveyor, went for the first time in the territory to set limits outside the township of Shefford . He returned in September and late October to determine the course of a path , the next month, will be opened by six men. The first break in the virgin forest Townships Eastern Townships allowed to connect Shefford Township to St-Jean.

200 years later the town of Bromont has installed a plaque in his memory at the corner of the street that bears his name to commemorate the event.
