The stamp was one of a set of five issued in 2011 celebrating the Art Deco design style in architecture. They depict five different structures built during the 1930s which exhibit the Art Deco style, each from a different province. This stamp in particular shows the Dominion Building located at 1975 Scarth Street in Regina, Saskatchewan. One of the elements of Art Deco design in architecture (and one that is often overlooked) is the extraordinary details that adorn these buildings. With this in mind, all of these stamps show only a portion of the structure and some show only a single detail. This stamp shows only the building’s central spire.
The Dominion Building was initiated as a work relief project to provide employment to construction workers during the Great Depression. It was designed by Francis Portnall and is considered one of the finest surviving examples of federal public buildings constructed in Canada during the 1930s. It was designated a federal heritage property in 1985.
