During times of potential flooding, field crews from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) race to gather vital hydro-logic data. They measure the river flow and water levels to provide the information needed by river forecast- ers, engineers, and emergency managers who rely on data from the USGS network of about 170 Indiana streamflow-gauging stations . The network is funded in a cooperative program of federal, State, and local agencies, and is part of a national network maintained by the USGS. Many of these stations are equipped to transmit real-time streamflow data. In times of emergency, real-time streamflow information is a key element in the protection of lives and property.

REALTIME FOR KOKOMO: Real-time data typically are recorded at 15-60 minute intervals, stored onsite, and then transmitted to USGS offices every 1 to 4 hours, depending on the data relay technique used. Recording and transmission times may be more frequent during critical events. Data from real-time sites are relayed to USGS offices via satellite, telephone, and/or radio and are available for viewing within minutes of arrival.

LOCAL GEOLOGY: The area surrounding the Kokomo Creek is farm land and residential areas. Since the late 1970's more of the farm land has been converted to residential areas. Because of this less ground area has been available to absorb the rain water. The fields that was once able to absorb the excess rain water is now flooding/pooling. What is not being able to be absorbed by the fields is flowing into the Kokomo creek along will the run-off from the residential areas. Since most of the surrounding area is relatively flat (not much of an elevation change). The water that does flow off the residential areas has caused the Kokomo Creek and its tributaries to flood repeatedly. The Kokomo Creek flows through the city of Kokomo until it converges with the Wildcat Creek just West of Highland Park. The Wildcat Creek then flows Westward until it converges with the Wabash River just beyond its convergence with the Tippecanoe River near Lafayette Indiana.
