The station was built in 1887 for the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore (PW&B) Railroad and later the Pennsylvania Railroad. The station is in a Victorian style and was designed by architect S.T. Fuller. The 1-1/2 story brick station is in a "T" shaped plan with hipped cross-gable roof and Victorian detailing. The station was transferred to Amtrak in 1970 during railroad consolidation at which time it was operating as freight only station, at that time it was closed. In 1987 the station was deeded by Amtrak to the City of Newark.
The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
It has now been converted to the Newark History Museum.
