[PT] O Penedo de Lexim representa parte de uma conduta vertical de um antigo vulcão, por onde o magma ascendeu para zonas mais superficiais da crusta, há cerca de 72 milhões de anos. Esta conduta alimentou um vulcão, entretanto erodido que, intruiu em calcários do Cretácico. Um dos aspectos mais relevantes deste sítio é a ocorrência de disjunção colunar com uma perfeição rara de observar em Portugal continental. A rocha encontra-se estruturada em colunas com base hexagonal que resultaram da contracção da lava durante o seu arrefecimento.

[EN] Penedo de Lexim represents part of a volcanic conduit of an ancient volcano through which the magma ascended to shallower zones of the crust about 72 million years ago. This conduit fed a volcano - that has been completely eroded - which intruded into limestones of the Cretaceous age. One of the most relevant aspects of this site is the occurrence of a columnar jointing with a perfection rarely found elsewhere on the Portuguese mainland. The rock is structured in columns with a hexagonal base, which resulted from contraction during the cooling of the lava.
