Fondé en 1984, le 3e impérial, centre d’essai en art actuel a été le premier centre d’artistes du réseau québécois et canadien à se consacrer, à long terme et de manière exclusive, à l’exploration de l’art actuel dans les espaces qui ne lui sont pas normalement dédiés.
Ses activités — recherche, création, production, diffusion, édition,et forums de réflexion.
Différents artistes comme Renée Durocher, peintre, y sont en résidence permanente tandis que d'autres viennent y passer une résidence temporaire.
