À la suite de l'incendie qui détruit ses installations montréalaises, la compagnie Empire Tobacco s'installe à Granby à la demande du maire S.H.C Miner.
L'usine de l'Imperial Tobacco fut construite en 1890. l'immeuble de brique et de bois, occupe une superficie de 78,000 p.c. répartie sur 5 étages.
Cette entreprise connaîtra une croissance rapide et deviendra un des éléments importants de la compagnie canadienne Imperial Tobacco, faisant de Granby une des plaques tournantes de l'industrie du tabac au Québec.
En 1970, l’impérial Tobacco ferme ses installations de Granby.
Le projet d'aménagement de l’Impéral est né en 1974, quand l’entreprise Chasco fait l'acquisition et développe des ateliers destinés aux artistes.
L'ancienne usine est occupée aujourd'hui par des bureaux de consultants, des lofts, quelques commerces et des ateliers d'artistes.
