This marker representing the 44 degrees south latitude line sits in the small township of Hinds, southwest of Ashburton. It was completed in 2012.

According to the the Ashburton Guardian, the marker was built by local Lindsay Bagrie, who has spent two years designing and making the steel sphere monument in his farm workshop. (visit link)
