The U.S. Capitol Building found it's home on Capitol Hill. The U.S. Capitol was partially destroyed during the burning of Washington from the British in the war of 1812. After British troop had pasted Yankee forces in the Battle of Bladensburg, Major General Robert Ross and his troops came to Washington and set fire to many government funded buildings including the U.S. Capitol. The British command was strictly enforce to only burn public buildings and not those privately owned. The capitol was then closed for a few years and it was latter rebuilt. The capitol then moved in the meantime to the Old Brick Capitol, now the U.S. Supreme court building, until the restorations could be complete in 1819.
