Fredonia was settled in the first decade of the 19th century. Fredonia has a town layout very much like the period New England towns. The Fredonia Commons served as a focal point for the activity in the village. The village was planned around one large rectangular tract of land, however during the 19th century Temple St divided the area into two parks.
Hezekiah Barker who settled in the area purchased the area in 1806. It was he that laid out the lots in the village and set aside the common area. Inn 1825 he deeded the property to the Town of Pomfret. Education was important to the early settlers, shown by the founding of Fredonia Academy in 1823. Religion played a big part as well as there was three different churches surrounding the common. Commercial activity was somewhat restricted in Fredonia since it lacked a connection to the railroad. However Risley Seed Gardens, established in 1830 was well known throughout the country for its seeds.
