This 100-acre museum focuses primarily on the history of the region's forestry industry, but also has exhibits on other parts of the local history. They have a dozen former logging locomotives, several of which are still operational and take visitors on a 2-kilometre ride around the grounds on a narrow gauge railway. Other significant features include a 90-foot tower yarder beside the entrance, a reconstructed fire lookout tower, and original bunkhouses relocated from former logging camps. There are several buildings that house indoor exhibits, as well as numerous outdoor artifacts scattered around the grounds.

The museum has its roots in the personal collection of G.E. (Gerry) Wellburn (1900-1992). The original owner of what would eventually become the Shawnigan Division of MacMillan & Bloedel Ltd., Gerry built up an impressive collection of old logging artifacts, including several locomotives. On June 28, 1958, the last spike was hammered in his own personal 1-mile railway, the Glenora Western Railway, on his 10-acre property in nearby Deerholme. In the early 1960s, Gerry wanted to find a permanent location to open a museum and bring awareness to the importance of forestry in the region's history. The current location was purchased in 1964 and the museum, then known as the Cowichan Valley Forest Museum, opened for the first time on May 24, 1965. It was renamed the BC Forest Museum in 1976, and later to its current name in 1999.
